About the role:
Bixal is seeking an AI Solutions Engineer / Full Stack Developer to support a high-visibility project focused on advancing AI-enabled digital solutions that improve access to healthcare and benefits. This role bridges technical solutioning and pilot support — configuring, testing, and iterating AI products that enhance digital experiences while ensuring accessibility, security, and trustworthiness. You’ll play a key role in helping transform research and discovery efforts into practical, user-centered solutions that can be deployed and scaled.
This is a full-time role, contingent on contract award, with a 12-month base period and potential extensions. While performance is tied to the project, Bixal is committed to transparency, collaboration, and professional development, keeping you informed of project status and supporting your career growth.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $120,000 – $130,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
- Support solution design and technical configuration of AI-enabled products (often leveraging low-code/no-code tools rather than heavy software build).
- Test and refine MVP solutions for performance, feasibility, and user acceptance.
- Build and optimize APIs (RESTful and GraphQL) to integrate AI workflows and data services.
- Contribute full-stack expertise (React, Node.js, TypeScript, Drupal, PostgreSQL, GraphQL) when custom development is needed.
- Participate in pilot deployments: assist with end-user training, monitor adoption, gather feedback, and support iterative updates.
- Ensure compliance with Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, and security/privacy requirements.
- Collaborate with team to document findings, testing results, and pilot outcomes in clear, plain-language reports for project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with UX researchers, data analysts, and product managers to align technical implementation with user needs.
- Contribute to Agile two-week sprints, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and delivery of sprint goals.
- Other relevant duties as assigned, qualified, and trained.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus at least four (4) years of related experience.
- Experience with full-stack development (React, Node.js, TypeScript, Express.js).
- Familiarity with Drupal, GraphQL, PostgreSQL (or similar).
- Exposure to AI integration (LLMs, NLP, or AI-enhanced workflows).
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Understanding of web security, privacy, and performance optimization.
- Experience working in Agile, sprint-based environments.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
- Experience with federal digital services, civic tech, or large-scale healthcare projects.
- Familiarity with Next.js, Metalsmith, or VA.gov ecosystem technologies.
- Hands-on experience with DevOps and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Understanding of healthcare data standards (ICD-10, CPT, LOINC, RxNorm, SNOMED).
- Background in AI product pilots, site performance optimization, or security hardening.
