About the role:
We are seeking a Senior Writer & Editor to oversee editorial quality and content production for large-scale federal programs supporting education and family engagement. This role requires a sharp eye for detail, excellent editorial judgment, and proven leadership in managing content across digital, print, and mobile platforms.
The Senior Writer & Editor will be responsible for ensuring accuracy, consistency, and accessibility across all communications products. You will guide editorial standards, oversee editing and proofreading processes, and collaborate closely with content developers, designers, and project managers to deliver high-quality materials to diverse audiences nationwide.
This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of one year with two one-year option periods. This role offers you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a project that aligns with Bixal’s mission of delivering innovative, human-centered solutions. Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $105,000 – $115,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day editorial operations, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality content across web, mobile, training, and print platforms.
- Lead editorial review and quality assurance for complex assignments, applying advanced knowledge and judgment to improve accuracy, clarity, and usability.
- Maintain and enforce editorial standards, style guides, and accessibility requirements across multiple platforms.
- Copyedit and proofread content for grammar, clarity, consistency, and compliance with brand, accessibility, and federal standards.
- Coordinate, review, and approve work from editors, freelancers, and quality assurance specialists; provide training and feedback as needed.
- Develop and refine editorial workflows, estimating staffing needs and monitoring workload distribution to meet deadlines.
- Ensure consistent application of organizational policies across content teams.
- Collaborate with writers, designers, developers, and project staff to ensure content accuracy, usability, and engagement.
- Use accessibility tools, such as screen readers, to validate compliance with Section 508 and related standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to the development of innovative editorial practices for emerging formats, including mobile and multimedia.
- Provide guidance and problem-solving support to lower-level editorial staff.
- Other relevant duties as assigned and qualified/trained to perform
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 7+ years of professional editing experience, including at least 3 years leading editorial workflows, mentoring other writers/editors, and ensuring content quality and consistency.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee editorial operations, including assigning work, monitoring progress, and ensuring quality outcomes.
- Proven expertise in editing and quality assurance for digital and print products in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
- Strong knowledge of editorial best practices, accessibility standards, and content management workflows.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and complex assignments.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with experience guiding diverse, cross-functional teams.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance
Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
- Experience editing content for federal agencies or large-scale public sector initiatives.
- Familiarity with web content management systems, digital publishing platforms, and HTML.
- Understanding of user experience (UX) and usability principles.
- Background in education, family services, or health-related communications.
