About the role:
We are seeking a Medical Writer to support a federal health information initiative with the National Library of Medicine (NLM). This work focuses on creating and maintaining high-quality, consumer-facing health content across platforms such as MedlinePlus and other NLM resources.
The Medical Writer will research, develop, edit, and update consumer health content for a broad range of audiences, including patients, families, journalists, and researchers. The role requires a deep understanding of medical conditions, trends in medical science and the landscape of peer institutions. This role also requires document handling skills that include formatting, tracking changes, preparing and trafficking files, and using task management software.
This is a full-time position with a defined performance period aligned to the contract lifecycle. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to NLM’s mission of keeping health knowledge free and easy to access.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $71,000 – $85,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
Write, edit, and update consumer health content for NLM platforms, including:
Health topic summaries
Medical test monographs
Research overviews and other biomedical content
Ensure all content is accurate, up-to-date, complete, and unbiased.
Translate complex medical and scientific information into clear, plain-language content appropriate for target audiences.
Research and synthesize information from reliable sources, including NIH institutes and scientific literature.
Document references and sources according to NLM standards.
Ensure content aligns with NLM, NIH, and HHS guidelines for style, tone, and audience level.
Collaborate with subject matter experts and team members to develop and update content.
Incorporate edits and revisions in a timely manner based on stakeholder feedback.
Support the creation and maintenance of internal documentation and content processes.
Ensure content is written at the appropriate level for patients, journalists, or researchers, depending on use case.
Other relevant duties as assigned and qualified/trained to perform
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or health-related field (e.g., biology, public health, epidemiology, medical journalism).
At least 2 years of experience writing or editing health, biomedical, or clinical content.
Demonstrated ability to interpret scientific literature, clinical data, and health information.
Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to produce clear, accessible content for general audiences.
Familiarity with plain language and federal communication standards.
Ability to conduct research and synthesize complex information effectively.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
Experience writing for consumer health websites or public-facing health platforms.
Familiarity with NIH, NLM, or other federal health agencies.
Experience working in in health or biomedical fields, or with subject matter experts.
Knowledge of health information systems, terminology, or coding systems.
