About the role:
Bixal is seeking a DevOps Engineer to support our work on a modernization initiative with our client. These roles will be embedded in Agile delivery teams supporting secure, scalable, and automated development pipelines for services used by millions of Veterans and caregivers. You will be instrumental in integrating security into every phase of the software development lifecycle—from infrastructure provisioning to CI/CD workflows—ensuring that releases are both fast and secure.
This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of one year with two one-year option periods. This role offers you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a project that aligns with Bixal’s mission of delivering innovative, human-centered solutions. Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $110,000 – $130,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines that support MHV product releases across web and mobile platforms.
- Integrate static and dynamic application security testing (SAST/DAST) tools into build and deployment processes.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and compliance reporting using tools like Terraform and Kubernetes.
- Collaborate closely with developers, security engineers, and cloud operations teams to continuously improve system resilience and security posture.
- Support ongoing vulnerability scanning, remediation workflows, and audit readiness for federal compliance.
- Contribute to DevSecOps documentation, playbooks, and knowledge-sharing initiatives across teams.
- Facilitate implementation of FedRAMP High, FISMA, privacy, and Responsible-AI guardrails; create model cards, risk assessments, and ATO artifacts.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, retros, demos) and collaborate closely with designers, researchers, and product managers.
- Other relevant duties as assigned, qualified, and trained to perform.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus at least five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Proven experience in DevOps, SecOps, or site reliability engineering, including leadership on secure pipeline design.
- Deep expertise with Terraform, Kubernetes, GitLab CI/CD, and AWS infrastructure.
- Experience integrating and validating automated observability and security tools into Agile development environments.
- Proficiency implementing compliance policies such as FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, or HIPAA, training team members on security standards, and ensuring compliance documentation is maintained.
- Proficiency with risk documentation for Authority-to-Operate (ATO) packages
- Familiarity with vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., OWASP ZAP, Snyk, Clair, or Trivy).
- Track record of leading cross-functional Agile teams, mentoring engineers, and communicating complex DevSecOps processes to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
- Proactive problem-solver—you see issues before they become outages.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance
Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
- Experience with VA health IT ecosystems (VistA, Oracle Health, FHIR) or other federal healthcare platforms.
- Familiarity with VA systems, enterprise service buses, or secure data exchange protocols.
- Certifications like AWS DevOps Engineer, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or GIAC DevSecOps.
